AIR NEW ZEALAND EXPERIENCES

On the 24th of March I had a jump seat flight from Auckland to Queenstown return. This involved observing the Captain and First Officer plan the trip, observe the walk around the plane (making sure it is fit to fly) and watching them fly the A320. It was an amazing opportunity to watch what goes on behind the scenes for a pilot behind the flight deck door. It was also a great chance to ask a bunch of questions about how they got into the industry and what the life of a pilot is like!

My Boeing 787 Simulator Experience with Zach Abel (left) and Matthew Farrington (right) was incredible!

We flew to and around Hong Kong, Los Angeles, San Fransisco, Singapore, Wellington and Auckland all in one day! The instructor, Alastair Tate, was able to change the flying conditions within seconds. This meant we could be flying under the Golden Gate Bridge in the sun and then flying over a snowy covered Auckland within seconds!

This was another good chance to hear the instructor’s stories of the airline industry. It showed me that there were many different career paths you could take in aviation.

I would like to thank Air New Zealand and Captain David Morgan for sponsoring the Walsh Memorial Scout Flying School prizes. A special thank you to Captain Chris Durney and First Officer James Ramsay on the flight deck of my jump seat flight and Alastair Tate the Instructor on the simulator experience, along with Jacob Snelgrove for organising everything!

Here are some more photos of my Air New Zealand A320 Jump Seat Flight and B787 Simulator Flight!
